 Accoya is a long life modified wood that has become the benchmark in not just the glazing industry but all timber building products for its performance and sustainability. The way the Accoya is modified is through Acetylation. This is where a chemical reaction in which the molecules that absorb the water in the wood are inhibited making the timber exceptionally more resistant to water absorption. This process is not a outside 'coating' like other timber preservatives, this is a 15-hour process in which all layers of the wood are penetrated. This makes the product incredibly stable and stock the well-known expanding of timber. Furthermore, as there is minimal shrinking and expanding this marginally stops paint cracking and flaking from the windows making maintenance much less frequent. This process is quote similar to pickling, meaning that the whole process is non-toxic. Meaning when it is discarded, there are no harmful chemicals that accompany the wood back into the environment.
